My ubuntu installation

  1. Turn off overlay scroll bar:
    gsettings set com.canonical.desktop.interface scrollbar-mode normal
    gsettings reset com.canonical.desktop.interface scrollbar-mode
  2. Add home directory to destop:
    gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.desktop home-icon-visible true
  3. Install vim, git, subversion, cntlm:
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y
    sudo apt-get install vim git subversion cntlm -y
  4. Install Silverlight (with closed firefox during installation) for Ipla:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pipelight/stable
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install --install-recommends pipelight-multi -y
    sudo pipelight-plugin --enable silverlight
    sudo pipelight-plugin --update
    touch $HOME/.config/wine-wininet-installer.accept-license
    Start and close browser
    sudo pipelight-plugin --create-mozilla-plugins
  5. Update grub:
    sudo /etc/default/grub /etc/default/grub.bak
    sudo vim /etc/default/grub
    change GRUB_DEFAULT from 0 to 4 to have:
    GRUB_DEFAULT=4
    sudo update-grub
  6. Remove games:
    sudo apt-get remove gnome-mines gnome-mahjongg aisleriot gnome-sudoku -y
  7. All bookmarks – Import from Chrome:
    Ctrl+Shift+O
  8. Disabling password for sudo:
    sudo visudo and add as LAST LINE bartek ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL and delete password for user sudo passwd bartek -d
  9. Clean old packages:
    sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo apt clean && sudo apt autoremove && sudo apt autoclean -y
  10. install java jdk – download from oracle http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html, maven, extract it: tar xzf jdk-8u92-linux-x64.tar.gz, add: export JAVA_HOME=~/dev/env/jdk1.8.0_92 to ~/.profile
  11. make win key act as control key (useful when running ubuntu from virtual box on OSX with Mac keyboard):
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources xkb-options "['altwin:ctrl_win']"
    and change terminal settings
    gsettings set org.gnome.Terminal.Legacy.Keybindings:/org/gnome/terminal/legacy/keybindings/ paste 'v'
  12. Change menu to be always visible:gsettings set com.canonical.Unity always-show-menus true
